Hello to all of you with an interest in our group.

Herewith a copy of the May notice which I hope will appear in your local “knock and drop” community newspapers. At time of writing I do not have our guest speaker’s topic. Also, I have missed getting this into today’s Peoples Post, so please spread the word if you can.

Thanks to Alf Vismer for sharing his further experience and ideas on proton beam therapy, which remains an interesting topic to hear about.

Our June meeting will probably be an open discussion meeting, unless we can find a guest speaker. July and October are also open for speakers, so any ideas or volunteers will be welcome…… A possible topic that has surfaced recently is the idea of “Focal HIFU”, and also “Focal Brachytherapy”, which would require some rather advanced technology, one suspects. It also seems that the technology for cancer scans is much enhanced, and mght make an interesting talk by someone in that field.

In August, Dr Louis Kathan, who in April 2010 up-dated us on developments in external beam treatment of prostate cancer, will speak. Again, his topic will be finalised nearer the date.

We look forward to Dr Hans Rabe’s speaking to us on Tuesday 18 September on New Issues. We will start at our normal time with open discussion to give Dr Hans time to get to us through the heavy traffic, but should still finish not too long after 19h00.

Do let us know any ideas you may have on improving the group effectiveness. I have more copies of Terry Herbert’s 2010 version of his booklet “A Strange Place”. Terry has kindly given permission for us to reproduce his latest version as long as his copyright is clearly stated in case he develops it into a book. I also think we must only allow its use for distribution free to group members, as has always been the case.

Our May meeting drew 46 attendees, including 7 first timers. Dr Hans Rabe’s excellent presentation on penile rehabilitation after prostatectomy lived up to his reputation for a no-nonsense approach to sensitive topics, and was much appreciated by the large audience.

Dr Trevor, himself a cancer survivor now, will up-date us on recent developments in the field of prostate cancer and its treatment.

We particularly value on-going attendance by our cancer survivors who can give support to newly diagnosed men and their partners/carers. Do spread the word to new patients you hear of.

The specialists who have treated many of us are also much appreciated for willingly giving of their time to keep us up to date with the latest trends in their specialisations.

Let us know if you think of ways to improve the way we publicise our group so that as many potential participants are made aware of the support available as possible. Also speak to our “committee” after the meeting if you have suggestions for future topics and speakers appropriate for the group.

New patients are also encouraged to share their experiences, and to approach their specialist urologists, oncologists, and other therapists to address the support group.

Venue, juice, tea/coffee and biscuits are courtesy of Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic. Donations are welcome, but optional, to support the group phone and mailing expenses, gifts for our speakers, and wine for the refreshment table (or bring the wine/soft drinks you prefer, to share).
