Our May meeting drew 46 attendees, including 7 first timers. Dr Hans Rabe’s excellent presentation on penile rehabilitation after prostatectomy lived up to his reputation for a no-nonsense approach to sensitive topics, and was much appreciated by the large audience.

Speaker: Dr Trevor Borchers
Dr Trevor, himself a cancer survivor now, will up-date us on recent developments in the field of prostate cancer and its treatment.

We particularly value on-going attendance by our cancer survivors who can give support to newly diagnosed men and their partners/carers. Do spread the word to new patients you hear of.

The specialists who have treated many of us are also much appreciated for willingly giving of their time to keep us up to date with the latest trends in their specialisations.

Let us know if you think of ways to improve the way we publicise our group so that as many potential participants are made aware of the support available as possible. Also speak to our “committee” after the meeting if you have suggestions for future topics and speakers appropriate for the group.

New patients are also encouraged to share their experiences, and to approach their specialist urologists, oncologists, and other therapists to address the support group.

Venue, juice, tea/coffee and biscuits are courtesy of Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic. Donations are welcome, but optional, to support the group phone and mailing expenses, gifts for our speakers, and wine for the refreshment table (or bring the wine/soft drinks you prefer, to share).

About 34 of us enjoyed a new perspective on our prostate problems at the July meeting when John Lazarus gave a much-appreciated talk on the baby boomers and their prospects of treatment for prostate cancer.

We had been advised by Gail Duncan that she was leaving the Constantiaberg for pastures new, and we will be thanking her for all her help with arranging venues, refreshments and presentation facilities at the Constantiaberg MediClinic. Robyn Arendse will be Gail’s successor and we look forward to working with Robyn in our future efforts to assist those diagnosed with prostate cancer.

As usual, wives/partners/carers are very welcome to attend.

Prostate Cancer Support Group

Our Prostate cancer Support Action group (PSA group) meets on the third Tuesday of the month fromJanuary to November in either the auditorium or the board room, courtesy of the Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic, Burnham Road, Plumstead, at 17:45 for 18:00. PSA group members from Durbanville to Simon’s Town, and Hout Bay to the Hottentots Holland, are available to compare notes and support newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients. Generous practitioners in the field, and public role models, give of their time to up-date us on the various treatment options, as well as on other aspects (nutritional, attitudinal, etc) of the condition.
