I have recently had a bilateral mastectomy, and divorced at the same time. (in 2008).
I thought i was stong enoungh up untill now, I have been through phases , of wanting to commit suiside (thoughts) I was wrong. I am a very private person. I haeve realised that i cannot do this alone (without support) and that i need help. Since the divorce I have no friends, I have no family but for one son and a daughter who have their own lives to live. Who can I go to for help and support?
I shall appreciate any informtion you may offer, thank you.
I am looking for a cancer support sysem,or friends I can connect with in this regard.
Thank you sincerely

I enjoyed reading Buddy Info Pack | People Living with Cancer. There's so many of us battling this disease that there have to continue being major breakthroughs regularly. I know it's being beaten daily by individuals but one day it'll be beaten completely.

I had MOPP ABV in 1990, and started joking about having "chemo-brain" when I noticed another time of forgetfulness, or inability to concentrate. I had high-dose chemo and a bone marrow transplant in 1992 and things so much worse. I couldn't follow instructions - even simple recipes with 3 ingredients - easy words and people's names often escaped me, and all the other symptoms I've read about were evident in my life. They still are, 18 years later. Not as badly, but they are definitely still having a LARGE impact on my life. I've stumbled upon most of the techniques for helping - single notebook to make notes in, list everything that needs to leave house with you the next day, etc. But, I'd like to know what types of mental exercises are helpful in improving the cognitive impairments. My cognitive functioning is extremely fast again, as shown in a test for speed of processessing information that I took in an employment interview in 2008. But all the other symptoms I've read about fit me.
Any insights on how to improve my brain would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jan

Good to see that you are doing well, Shaun! My brother, who also has a mild intellectual disability, was diagnosed with CML in 2008. He is also on Gleevec and tolerates the treatment well. We are so grateful that this medication is available. He has no side-effects. Other harsher treatments would have been very difficult for him to understand, because of his disability. I have just heard that his Gleevec has been approved again by his medical aid until the end of this year. Such a huge relief. I wish you, and all your internet friends, well!

Hi Chris
It seems that nephrologists can be very supportive! I arrived at Dr Bigalke's office at about 4 30 in the afternoon after my GP had referred me that very same day. I had blood in my urine and no pain so I just thought it was a strange period. After a sonar Dr B told me that it might be cancer and helped arrange a CT scan for the next day. When I left his office he must have seen that I was shocked out of my mind because he gave me a warm comforting hug. I was deeply grateful but paradoxically VERY VERY concerned by then. He was an extremely good surgeon and subsequently very caring as well.
Most of the information I gained about kidney cancer also came from the internet but as you well know it's very clinical and sometimes quite frightening. For now I am OK despite a second operation to remove the cancerous adrenal gland from my other kidney.
And yes, it would have been nice to have someone to talk to because it is a frightening experience.

Dear Raynolda
Thank you for your story. It has opened my eyes to a totally different experience of cancer, I had a wonderful support team of family and friends whereas you had to battle prejudices as well as your cancer. Your story can only be an inspiration, not only to people in similar situations but to everyone who has ever felt that cancer is the end of the road.
Thank you for telling your story

Hi Elmarie,

Thank you for you post. We need to know a bit more information to be able to recommend some Drs. Where is your dad being treated at the moment? And by whom? Would your parents be able to afford private care or is he a state patient? If you don't want to reply on the website, you are welcome to send me an email to eldre@plwc.org.za

Warm Buddy Regards,
